AI visibility for care homes

Britain's best-rated care homes are the ones AI cannot find.

A family looking for care rarely starts with a phone call. They start late at night, worried, typing the whole situation into ChatGPT or Gemini and asking for help. The AI answers with the homes it can read and trust. We checked 2,307 UK care homes - and found the homes families most deserve to find are often the ones AI never names. Check yours free, no email.

The short version

We checked 2,307 UK care homes for how visible they are to AI search engines. The average score was just 48 out of 100 - the lowest of any sector we have published - and not one home of the 2,307 scored AI-Ready. The most uncomfortable finding: a CQC "Outstanding" rating barely helps. Outstanding homes averaged 50.0; Requires-improvement homes averaged 46.1. The single most AI-visible home in Britain is rated only Requires improvement. Quality of care and AI visibility are two different things - and families searching at 2am deserve to find the good homes. SearchScore checks whether AI can find yours. Free, no email.

The new front door

What families now ask AI before they ever call.

These are the questions adult children now type into ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Grok and DeepSeek - often late at night, after a fall or a hospital discharge, when the decision suddenly can't wait. Each one is a moment a home is either named, or isn't.

"My mum has dementia and can't stay at home any more - what care homes near me can take her?"
"Find a good CQC-rated care home with a vacancy in my area."
"How much does nursing care cost per week and which homes are worth it?"
"Dad's coming out of hospital - who offers respite care starting this week?"
"What should I look for in a care home, and which local ones actually meet it?"

The family isn't shopping. They're frightened, and they want a trustworthy answer fast. The AI gives them the homes it can read clearly - and skips the ones it can't, however good the care inside.

What gets scored

Three things decide whether a family enquires. We score all three.

Most tools look at only one. For a care home, being found is no use if the family can't quickly see your care approach, your fees and how to arrange a visit - so we measure that too.

Personal-service scoring

A care home earns trust through people, records and reputation, not sales funnels and whitepapers - and the scoring reflects that. SearchScore measures what matters for your world: whether your care types and fees are readable, whether your CQC record and registered manager are visible, whether a family can clearly see how to arrange a visit. Whether you're a single family-run home or a group of forty, you're not marked down for being a care provider instead of an e-commerce store.

The data

We checked 2,307 UK care homes. Not one is AI-Ready.

SearchScore audited 2,307 care homes drawn from the CQC register and public listings, from single family-run homes to national groups. 2,196 of them carry a current CQC rating. This is the lowest-scoring cohort we have ever published - and the story underneath the average is worse than the average.

The finding that should stop you

A CQC "Outstanding" rating does not make a home easier for AI to find.

Outstanding-rated homes averaged an AI visibility score of 50.0. Requires-improvement homes averaged 46.1 - a gap of just 3.9 points. The regulator's highest honour buys a home almost no advantage in the place families now look first.

It goes further. The single most AI-visible care home in Britain is Watermoor House, scoring 77.8 - and it is rated only "Requires improvement". It beats all 125 Outstanding-rated homes in the country. The quality of care and the visibility of care have come apart, and it is families who pay the price for the gap.

Where homes are strongest and weakest

Across the eight categories that make up the AI Search Score, care homes tend to do the plumbing well and the substance poorly. The strongest categories are Technical (71.7/100) and AI Citability (71.2), followed by Topical Authority (60.1). Then it falls away: AI Platform Readiness (43.3), E-E-A-T Content (42.3), Platform Optimisation (41.0), Brand Authority (33.3), and weakest of all, Structured Data (27.4) - the machine-readable markup that tells an AI, in its own language, what your home offers, where it is and who runs it. It is the single biggest gap, and one of the most fixable.

What holds care-home sites back

What holds care-home sites back.

None of these mean you've done anything wrong - they're just the things AI engines quietly trip over. The audit tells you which apply to your home.

1
The care itself is never written down.

The warmth, the activities, the way staff know each resident - it's real, but it lives in your team, not on your website. AI can only recommend what it can read. If your care approach isn't described in plain text, your strongest asset is invisible to it. It is no accident that E-E-A-T Content averages just 42.3 across the sector.

2
Nothing tells the machine what you are.

Structured data is the weakest category of all, averaging 27.4 out of 100. It's the behind-the-scenes markup that states, in a form AI reads directly, that you are a care home, in this town, offering nursing or dementia care, with these fees. Without it, the AI is left to guess - and it often guesses a directory instead of you.

3
Your CQC record does the talking, but only on CQC's site.

A great rating sits on the regulator's pages, not clearly on yours. Because it isn't restated in readable text on your own site, AI can't tie your reputation to your name - which is exactly why an Outstanding rating buys almost no visibility advantage.

4
Fees and vacancies are a phone call away.

Families ask AI about weekly cost and current availability. If those answers aren't on your site as text, the AI can't quote you, and the family moves to a home that spells it out. The cautious, specific answer wins.

5
Every home's website sounds the same.

"Person-centred care in a warm, homely environment" describes thousands of homes. AI matches specifics: the named manager, the dementia specialism, the town you serve, the activities you actually run this week. Sameness makes you unquotable.

Common questions

Home managers and care groups ask us, answered.

Why can't families find our care home when they ask AI?

Usually because the things that prove your home is a good choice - your care approach, your rooms and fees, your staff and your CQC record - aren't written in plain, extractable text on your own website. When a family asks ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini for a home, the AI recommends the providers it can actually read and understand. In our study of 2,307 UK care homes, not one scored AI-Ready, so this is close to universal. The free audit shows exactly which gaps apply to your home.

Does a good CQC rating help our home show up in AI search?

Almost not at all, and that is the most striking finding in our data. Across 2,307 homes, Outstanding-rated homes averaged an AI visibility score of 50.0 and Requires-improvement homes averaged 46.1 - a gap of just 3.9 points. The single most AI-visible care home in Britain, Watermoor House, is rated only Requires improvement and beats all 125 Outstanding homes. Quality of care and AI visibility are two different things. A brilliant home can still be invisible to the families searching for it.

How do families use ChatGPT to find a care home?

Often late at night, under pressure, after a fall or a hospital discharge, an adult child types the whole situation into ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini and asks for help. They ask for dementia care nearby, for a well-rated home with a vacancy, for the cost of nursing care, for respite options, for what to look for. The AI answers with the specific homes it can read and trust. If your home isn't in that answer, the family never learns you exist.

Is the audit really free?

Yes. You get your full diagnosis - your AI Search Score, SEO Score and conversion score, plus what's holding your home back - free, with no email required. Ongoing tracking starts from $25/month, and the done-for-you service is optional.

We're a small independent home - is this built for us?

Yes, and the data says small homes can win. The most AI-visible home in the country is a single independent home, not part of a large group. The scoring recognises that a family-run home works differently from a corporate operator, so you aren't marked down for not running the machinery of a large chain. Independence is not the disadvantage people assume - being unreadable to AI is.

Do I need technical skills to improve our score?

No. The audit is built for home managers and group marketers, not developers. You get plain-English scores and a prioritised list of what to fix. Most of the fixes are about writing what you already do in clear, readable text. If you'd rather not do it yourself, the done-for-you service makes the changes for you.
