How does AI citation tracking work?

AI citation tracking monitors whether AI search engines (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, DeepSeek, Grok and Perplexity) recommend or cite your business when users ask category-relevant questions. SearchScore Tracker runs structured queries and tells you which engines named you, which ranked you, and which named competitors instead. Read the SAVI Report for the broader benchmark.

When a customer asks ChatGPT "who's the best at X?", they don't see ten links. They see three names. You're either one of them, or you're invisible. Traditional SEO tools don't track this. Most of your competitors aren't tracking it either. That changes for whoever notices first.

What you'll know that your competitors don't.

1
AI sentiment analysis

Whether AI is praising you, or trashing you.

Being mentioned isn't enough. AI might call you "the leading option" or "the cheap alternative that compromises on quality." We classify every citation as positive, mixed or negative. So you know what AI actually says, not just whether your name came up.

2
Three-discipline score tracking

Three scores tracked over time, not just one.

Your dashboard shows AI Search, SEO and CRO scores side by side, each with a tier label, trend line, and history chart. Watch all three move week over week. See which discipline is holding you back, and which one's pulling ahead.

3
AI citation tracking

Whether AI is recommending you, at all.

We ask ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, DeepSeek, Grok and Perplexity the questions your customers ask. Every week (every day on Pro). You'll see exactly which AI engines mention you, and which ones don't.

4
AI position tracking

Where you place when AI lists options.

When ChatGPT names three providers, it matters whether you're #1 or #3. We track your position in every AI answer. See yourself rise, or get pushed down, over time.

5
Competitor citation monitoring

Who's stealing AI's attention from you.

Pick up to 5 competitors. Every week you'll see how often AI names them in the questions your customers ask, and whether they're climbing or falling against you. Catch a competitor's surge the week it happens, not the quarter after.

6
Force a rescan

Made a change? See the impact today.

Deployed an llms.txt file. Added schema. Rewrote your homepage. Don't wait a week to see if it worked. Force a fresh scan from your dashboard and see your scores update live.

7
Plain-English insights

Guidance written for your data, not generic templates.

Each scan comes with a written commentary tailored to what we actually found on your site. Not a dashboard of numbers without context. Words like: "All three scores trending up. Your GEO climb is faster than your category benchmark, the schema and llms.txt fixes you deployed three weeks ago are doing what we expected."

8
Brand aliases

Citations under your trading names too.

Register up to 4 alternate names: old brands, acronyms, trading names. If AI cites "the FileSeal team" instead of "FileSeal," or uses your acronym, we count it. Catches citations you'd otherwise miss.

9
Alerts between digests

The week things break, not the quarter after.

A digest in your inbox covers the trend. Bigger changes trigger an alert email between digests. So you find out the day a competitor overtakes you, or the day AI stops recommending you, not next quarter when revenue dips.

10
False-positive marking

A real number, not an inflated one.

Spot a citation that doesn't really count? Mark it as a false positive in one click. Your citation rate adjusts automatically. The dashboard shows your real score, not a vanity number.

What you'll see in your dashboard.

Three scores tracked over time, a citation heatmap coloured by sentiment, and plain-English guidance written for your data, not generic templates. Open any citation for the AI's full response, where you ranked, and which competitors got named instead.

Example dashboard view, based on the real product. Data fictional. Your actual scores depend on the questions you configure and how AI responds.

Shown: a Starter view (up to 25 questions, scanned weekly). Pro subscribers see up to 100 questions, scanned daily.

See exactly what each AI said.

Not just whether AI mentioned you. Exactly what it said, where you ranked, and which competitors got named in your place.

Example detail view, based on the real product. Data fictional.

What is AI citation tracking?
AI citation tracking monitors whether AI search engines (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity) recommend or cite your business when users ask category-relevant questions. SearchScore Tracker runs weekly scans against questions your customers actually ask, and reports which engines named you, which ranked you, and which named competitors instead.
Which AI engines does the Tracker check?
SearchScore Tracker scans ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, DeepSeek, Grok and Perplexity weekly (or daily on Pro). These six cover the dominant share of AI search traffic in 2026.
How often do scans run?
Founders' tier and Starter run weekly scans. Pro runs daily scans, which catches changes between digests so you can respond faster when AI engines shift their recommendations.
How is this different from Google Search Console?
Google Search Console reports impressions and clicks from Google's organic search. It does not track whether AI engines like ChatGPT or Claude mention your business in their generated answers. SearchScore Tracker fills that specific gap by running structured queries against the AI engines themselves.
Does the Tracker tell you if AI is talking positively or negatively about your brand?
Yes. Every citation is classified as positive, mixed, or negative by a follow-up classifier model. You see not just whether AI mentioned you, but whether it called you the best option, a reasonable alternative, or warned users away. The classifier provides a short reason for each rating.
Can the Tracker show what position you rank at when AI lists options?
Yes. Each cited result records the position you placed at in the AI's answer. So if ChatGPT lists three providers and you're third, you'll see position #3. You can track your position trend week-over-week against competitors.
Can the Tracker catch citations under trading names or acronyms?
Yes. You can register up to 4 alternate names – old brands, trading names, acronyms, or rebrands. The Tracker matches all of them against AI responses, so citations under any of your aliases still count.
Does the Tracker track SEO and CRO too, or just AI citations?
All three. Your dashboard shows AI Search, SEO, and CRO scores side by side, each with a tier label and history chart. Scores update weekly (daily on Pro) so you can see all three disciplines moving over time, not just AI citations.
Can I force a rescan to see the impact of changes I made?
Yes. After deploying changes – adding schema, configuring llms.txt, rewriting content – you can trigger a fresh scan from the dashboard rather than waiting for the next scheduled scan. Useful for verifying that fixes had the intended impact.
Are the insights AI-generated or just templated?
Tailored. Each scan comes with a written commentary based on what was actually found in your data: which AI engines cited you, what sentiment they used, where you ranked, and which gaps explain the result. Not generic templates that say the same thing to everyone.

Why AI citation tracking matters in 2026.

The shift is already happening. In 2024, most buyers researched B2B purchases by Googling, comparing five tabs, and reading reviews. By the end of 2025, a growing share started asking ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, or Perplexity instead, and acted on the names those engines surfaced first. The shortlist isn't ten blue links any more. It's three names in a generated paragraph. You're either named or you're invisible.

Traditional SEO tools don't catch this. Semrush and Ahrefs measure Google's ten-blue-links index brilliantly. They always have. But they don't query ChatGPT. They don't classify whether Claude's mention of your brand was positive or negative. They don't tell you that Perplexity ranked you third behind two competitors you didn't even know were competing. The category is new, the signals are different, and the existing tools weren't built to read them.

What an AI engine says about your business now shapes the decisions of buyers who never visit your website at all. A negative sentiment citation in ChatGPT, something like "X is reliable but premium-priced and may not suit budget users", quietly disqualifies you from every budget-conscious buyer asking that engine for recommendations. You'll never see those buyers in your analytics. They never clicked.

SearchScore Tracker exists for this specific gap. Scans across six engines (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, DeepSeek, Grok, Perplexity). Citation-level sentiment classification. Position tracking. Competitor monitoring. Brand-alias matching so you catch citations under acronyms and trading names. False-positive marking so the dashboard shows your real score, not an inflated one. None of it replaces SEO. All of it answers a question SEO tools can't.

The businesses paying attention to AI citations now will own the answers AI generates for years to come. The ones who wait will spend the next three years trying to claw back ground they didn't notice was lost. Start tracking before your competitors do.
