Definition

The condition of having many low-value or duplicate URLs indexed, diluting a site's quality signals.

Index bloat occurs when large numbers of thin, duplicate or auto-generated URLs, such as filtered listings, internal search pages or tag archives, end up in the search index. It wastes crawl budget, spreads ranking signals thinly and can lower the overall quality assessment of a domain. Remedies include noindexing or consolidating low-value pages, tightening canonicalisation and controlling the URL spaces that generate junk pages.
