Pagination

Definition

The practice of splitting a large set of content across a sequence of numbered pages.

Pagination divides long lists such as category listings, archives or search results into a series of pages linked in sequence. From an SEO perspective each paginated page should be crawlable, self-canonical and clearly linked so that deep items remain discoverable, since collapsing signals onto page one can orphan later items. Following the deprecation of rel="next"/rel="prev" as an indexing signal, clean anchor links and sensible URL patterns are the primary way to help crawlers traverse paginated sets.
