Definition

The underlying goal a person is trying to achieve when they type a query into a search engine or AI assistant.

Search intent is the reason behind a query - what the searcher actually wants, whether that is to learn something, find a specific site, compare options, or make a purchase. Matching intent is the single biggest factor in whether a page ranks or gets cited, because search engines and answer engines reward content that satisfies the goal, not merely content that repeats the keyword. Intent is usually grouped into informational, navigational, commercial investigation, and transactional categories, and a single query can carry mixed or shifting intent over time.
